Hello! I am the creator of Absolutely Everything Curly, the unbiased and science-backed go-to source, for all people with curly, coily, and wavy hair.
I am a mom, a wife, a Ph.D. scientist, a woman of color, and a biotech and pharmaceutical patent attorney. I earned a Hair Practitioner’s Certificate from the International Association of Trichologists. My background is biracial and as you can see, I have 3b hair and recently ditched the dye. I have been wearing my hair naturally curly for most of my life. I say ”most” because on several occasions, I went through phases of texturizing, blow-drying, and chemically straightening my hair. I hated the smell, the itchy scalp, and frizz that inevitably followed. It was not until I stumbled upon Lorraine Massey’s book, Curly Girl: The Handbook, and Teri LaFlesh’s book, Curly Like Me, that I finally understood how to properly care for my beautiful voluminous curls.
As a Ph.D. scientist, I was curious to learn why certain hair products worked well for my hair but others did not. I started devouring scientific articles about hair, reviewing hair products, and understanding ingredients, all while scouring the web for information. The amount of misinformation was astonishing. And the marketing tricks some companies use to advertise their hair products were equally surprising as they were disappointing.
The last year or so, I figured out the best techniques for obtaining defined curls that last for days without frizz. Until then, my curls looked satisfactory every day but with daily rewetting and styling, was extremely time-consuming and frustrating. Figuring out the proper technique to style my hair and what it uniquely needed, was a real game-changer.
I am deeply passionate about sharing my knowledge and research. This educational space was created to help you discover and embrace your hair in its natural form while saving you time and money in the process. The information provided here will help you learn about your hair’s characteristics, and the proper hair products and techniques that will enhance its authentic look and feel.
I invite you to continue the movement of cherishing, embracing, and discovering your natural beauty, with our Hair Basics and Curly Hair Quiz, to find out what kind of curly girl (or person) you are!

Hi, my name is Carol. I am racially mixed – Caucasian, West African, East Asian, and a few others. My friends used to call me Heinz 57 flavors, which is both a funny and accurate description. I have been attempting to tame my curls for some time and am thankful for all the natural products now on the market, many of which are designed for our different hair types.
For these and other reasons, I am happy to join the AEC team and contribute information I have learned throughout the years, and continue to learn as my research and curly hair journey continues.
